Sex Survey 2020
Adulttoymegastore releases sex survey 2020

Adulttoymegastore commissioned UMR to carry out this 2020 sex survey. UMR offers clients an extensive quantitative research suite covering telephone, online, and face-to-face collection. This survey covered 2500 respondents handpicked by UMR to cover age, gender and region in Australia and New Zealand.

Sex
New Zealanders are having more sex than Australians

The survey found 72% of New Zealanders are having sex at least a few times a year, while only 68% of Australians are. New Zealand men are having sex more often that Aussie men.

New Zealand men (57%) are having sex at least a few times a month, while only 50% of Aussie men are. The survey also found 79% of Kiwi males are having sex at least a few times a year, while only 70% of Aussies are. New Zealand and Australian women are the same, both having sex at least a few times a year (65%).

New Zealand men are having sex at least a few times a month (57%) while only 42% of New Zealand women are.

Aussie males are having sex more frequently than women. 70% of Aussie males are having sex at least a few times a year, while only 65% of Aussie women.

Almost half of kiwis and Aussies are satisfied with how much sex they're having. 45% of Kiwis are satisfied/very satisfied with the amount of sex they're having, as are 46% of Aussies. 28% of Kiwis are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, as are 24% of Aussies.

Relationships
"My sex life is monotonous and boring" - 1 in 5 Australians

Aussies are more likely than New Zealanders to say they have a "monotonous and boring" sex life.

20% of Aussies believe their sex life is monotonous and boring, compared with just 13% of New Zealanders.

Aussie men who responded to the Adulttoymegastore survey through UMR said they were more likely than Australian women to feel this way, with over one in six (21%) believing their sex life is boring. 18% of Australian women felt the same way.

Only 14% of New Zealand men think their sex life is boring, and only 13% of New Zealand women.

Baby boomer women (14%) and women from the Silent Generation (9%) are the least likely to think their sex lives are monotonous and boring. While men from Gen Y (24%) are most likely to feel this way.

The survey found New Zealand men are happier with their sex lives than Aussie men – but only slightly, with 43% of Kiwi men compared with 40% of Aussie men. Australian and New Zealand men felt the same – with 42% saying they were happy.

Generation Z is the happiest with their sex lives at 54%, closely followed by Gen Y at 47%. The least happy with their sex lives is the silent generation at 33%.

"There is likely a number of reasons why as we age we become less happy with our sex lives," Emma Hewitt says.

"But it doesn't have to be that way. There is a correlation between those who can confidently say what they enjoy and those who are happy with how things are in the bedroom."

Experimenting and working out what you like can improve your sex life. Australians are slightly more likely than New Zealanders to enjoy experimenting with sex toys during sex.

25% of Aussies and 23% of kiwis say they've experimented with adult toys. 27% of Australian men said they enjoy sex toys compared with 23% of New Zealand men.

The younger generations enjoy experimenting with sex toys more than older generations.

Gen Z enjoys experimenting with sex toys during sex more than any other gen (38%).

Gen Y: 34% Gen X: 27% Baby boomers: 15% Silent Gen: 7%

Emma Hewitt says there are a number of ways to improve your sex life.

"Even if your sex life is what you'd consider "good" you can make it great. Toys are a great way of adding fun to the bedroom and switching up your routine. Spontaneity is great for bringing excitement into the bedroom."

"Trying new things, seeing what you don't like and do like – it's all really crucial. It's a journey you share as a couple and it's worth investing in it. I meet a lot of folks from Australia and New Zealand who want to understand each other more in bed. I encourage them to work on their communication. If you can't confidently say what you want to do in bed, or share what feels good and what doesn't – everything else is an uphill battle. But you can get there – it just takes honesty, vulnerability, and maybe a toy or two!"

The survey of Australians and New Zealanders asked about sex, sexuality and masturbation and found that Generation Z-ers are the most confident generation with 54% saying they feel able to assert their sexual needs and desires with their partner.

Gen Y were not far behind with 52%. Then gen X with 44% and baby boomers with 40%, followed by the Silent Generation at 34%.

Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction Emma Hewitt says being able to assert your desires and talk about what you like and don't like is crucial in having your needs met.

"We can see from this survey that a lot of Australians and New Zealanders are happy with their sex lives. But it's surprising to see one in five Australians aren't. We want everyone to have a happy and healthy sex life so this is important intel to have."

If you can't confidently say what you want to do in bed, or share what feels good and what doesn't - everything else is an uphill battle

Sex
Aussies last longer in the bedroom than New Zealanders

Of those surveyed, 57% of Aussies said they have sex for 10 minutes or longer on average, while only 52% of Kiwis do.

The survey found 33% of New Zealanders typically have sex for 10 minutes or less, compared to 31% of Aussies.

One in three New Zealanders and Australians have sex for 10 minutes or less on average. They are more likely to be kiwi, and male.

Generational data suggests the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers have more quickies. They are more likely than any other generation to have sex for less than 5 minutes.

Of respondents from the baby boomer generation 13% boomers say sex usually lasts less than five minutes. Of the Silent Generation, 17% said sex lasts less than five minutes.

Generation X is more likely than other generations to have sex that lasts over 30 minutes. One in ten said 30+ minutes of sex is normal for them.

One in four respondents said 10-15 minutes is the ideal length of time for sex. 19% of respondents felt 15 to 20 minutes is the ideal length of time.

A minimum of 10 minutes is ideal length for 69% of Aussies and Kiwis.

Less than 5 minutes is only ideal for 4% of respondents from both countries.

With less time spent on pleasure during sex it's unsurprising that only one in three respondents orgasm every time they have sex.

Unsurprisingly they are more likely to be men.

Almost half of New Zealand and Australian men say they orgasm every time they have sex (49% each).

Fatigue and stress are ruining our sex lives – NZers, Australians

It's important to just tell the truth. If your relationship is important to you, you must be able to be vulnerable with each other and share without judgement.

Fatigue was the number one cause of bedroom inactivity according to Australians and New Zealanders surveyed by UMR. Almost one in two respondents said their sex lives were hindered by fatigue (42% of New Zealanders and 40% of Australians). New Zealand women were the most affected followed by Australian women.

There were generational impacts too, with Gen Y and Gen X the most impacted by fatigue. Of those surveyed 51% of Gen Y respondents said lack of sleep was impacting their sex lives, followed by 46% of Gen X. Generations least affected are baby boomers (30%) and Silent gen (24%)

One third of New Zealanders and Australians said their sex lives were impacted by stress. Generation Y were again losing out at 44%.

Only 21% of Baby boomers and 14% of the silent generation said stress was taking a toll on their sex lives.

Gen Z (48%) and Gen Y (47%) respondents also said they didn't have enough time to have as much sex as they wanted.

Head of Customer Satisfaction at Adulttoymegastore Emma Hewitt says finding the time to have sex when you're not tired and you're not stressed is absolutely key to having great sex. Having a different libido to your partner was another challenge, she said.

"Our survey found 29% of New Zealanders and Australians believe having a different libido to their partners is hindering their sex lives. Those difference impact women at 30% more than men at 28% and they hit Gen X the most. Gen Z were the least likely to have libido differences with only 17%. Gen Z men in particular had only 7% report a difference."

Emma Hewitt says the key to working out libido differences and get back to having a healthy sex life is to be open and honest with each other.

"It's important to just tell the truth. If your relationship is important to you, you must be able to be vulnerable with each other and share without judgement. Talk about your needs, not just with sex but with intimacy too. Talk about masturbation, how often you'd ideally like to be intimate, and what sexual activity works best for you. It's never too late to have the conversation.

Relationships
"I know what I'm doing in bed - Australians

24% of Aussie men are confident in their sexual performance compared with only 15% of New Zealand men.

Aussies are more confident in the bedroom than New Zealanders. Our survey found New Zealand men lack confidence in the bedroom. 27% of Aussies are confident with their abilities in the bedroom, compared with just 21% of New Zealanders. Aussie women are the most confident (31%) compared with 27% of New Zealand women. 24% of Aussie men are confident in their sexual performance, compared with only 15% of New Zealand men!

Generation X men are the least confident in the bedroom (17%), while men from the Silent Generation (36%) are the most confident. Silent Generation women are the most confident in the bedroom (50%), followed by the younger Gen Z women (40%).

Sex
One in four people have sent nudes!

Over one in four New Zealanders and Australians have taken naked selfies. Those taking nudes were more likely to be women, but NZ men like sending naked selfies as much as women do.

The UMR survey commissioned by Adulttoymegastore found 30% of New Zealanders and 28% of Australians have sent naked photos of themselves to someone. Aussie men are the least likely to sent a nude compared to New Zealand men (25% of Australian men vs 30% of New Zealand men). Around 31% of Australian women have sent nudes and 29% of New Zealand women. Naked selfie sending is most common in younger generations - Gen Z (48%) and Gen Y (47%).

Satisfaction
Parents struggling to have good sex often

It has long been known that kids can be the ultimate killer for their parents' sex lives. The survey reinforced that. New Zealanders were more impacted than Australians when it came to kids stopping their sex lives. The survey found 26% of New Zealanders and 20% if Australians believed having kids had impacted their sex lives negatively.

Most affected were New Zealand women at 29% and New Zealand men. In Australia 21% of women and only 18% men found kids impacted their sex lives. The generations suffering the most are those that are more likely to have younger children - such as Gen Y and X (30%). Gen Z is the least likely to be affected (6%), and then the silent generation (8%).

Sex
Who is better in bed?

The age-old question of who is better in bed – Australians or New Zealanders – might have been answered!

We asked respondents: How good do you think New Zealanders and Australians are in bed? In the self-scoring scale, New Zealanders gave themselves 57.8 on the scale, while Australians gave themselves 60.7 on the scale out of 100.

We asked respondents from both countries how often they have sex and if they're happy with their sex lives.

Less than half of New Zealanders and Australians happy with their sex lives. There is only a slight difference but the survey found New Zealand men are happier with their sex lives than Australian men with 43% against 40%.

Australian and New Zealand women have the same rates of happiness - 42% of Australian and New Zealand women are happy with their sex lives.

Generation Z is the happiest with their sex lives at 54%.

If we saw that more than half of the country wasn't happy with their lives - we'd be shocked. So why is it that with sex we don't talk about it?

Closely followed by Gen Y at 47%. The least happy generation is the silent generation at 33%.

Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction Emma Hewitt says it's unfortunate so few New Zealanders and Australians are happy with their sex lives.

"I'm sad to see less than half of New Zealanders and Australians are actually happy with their sex lives. We have a long way to go as a society to get people to recognise that they deserve a healthy and happy sex life that's mutually fulfilling. If we saw that more than half of the country wasn't happy with their lives – we'd be shocked. So why is it with sex that we don't talk about it? This stuff really matters!"

Emma Hewitt says she hopes the sex survey results launch a nationwide conversation on sex.

"People want to talk about their sex lives and how to make their sex lives better. But they're scared. They don't know where to start. In the survey we asked if people agree or disagree with the statement "sex is important to me". The survey found 52% of New Zealanders agreed and 54% of Australians agreed. We also asked if great sex is the key to a happy relationship. Men from both countries agreed that great sex is key to a happy relationship (59%). For women, 49% of Australian women agreed and 43% of New Zealand women agreed.

The younger generations are more likely to think great sex is key to a happy relationship. Silent Generation: 45% Baby boomers: 46% Gen X: 54% Gen Y: 62% Gen Z: 60%

"It's understandable that as we age, we start to feel sex matters less. That's OK – but it needs to be something you discuss as a couple so you're both on the same page."

Relationships
Health issues impacting sex lives

Health issues were a major impact for one in four New Zealanders and Australians (25%).

Those facing health issues are more likely to be men (26%) than women (24%). They are also more likely to be older.

This included baby boomers (32%), and the silent generation (43%) respondents were, which are more likely to be men (49%). Least affected are Generation X, at just 11%.

New Zealand women from Generation Z are more likely than any other generation to be bisexual, at a whopping 27%. Over one in four Gen Z women identified as bisexual in the survey and only 61% identified as heterosexual. This was the lowest of all generations and genders. In Australia 8% of Gen Z women identified as bisexual with 78% identifying as heterosexual.

Australian men from Gen Y and Gen X are more likely to be homosexual – with 6% of Gen Y Australian men say they're bisexual, and 8% of Generation X.

Of the 2500 respondents, 87% of Australians said they're heterosexual and 84% of New Zealanders said they're heterosexual.

Overall, 7% of New Zealanders and 5% of Australians said they're bisexual. Australian men are more likely to be homosexual than New Zealand men based on the survey. 5% of Australian men surveyed are homosexual, compared with 3% of New Zealand men. 2% of New Zealand women surveyed are lesbian, compared with 1% of Australian women. 1% of New Zealanders and Australians surveyed are Asexual.

Australian women and baby boomer men are more likely to be heterosexual, with 94% of men and 94% of women identifying as heterosexual.

As the generations get younger, the likelihood of identifying as heterosexual decreases.

93% of the silent generation is heterosexual. 93% of baby boomers are heterosexual. 86% of Gen X are heterosexual. 83% of Gen Y are heterosexual. 75% of Gen Z are heterosexual.

With this trend, bisexuality is the second most common sexual orientation (second to heterosexuality), followed by homosexuality, lesbian, heteroflexible, Asexual, Pansexual and Queer.

New Zealanders are more likely than Australians to have had a sexual experience with someone of the same gender. 17% of New Zealanders have, 15% of Australians. Relationships
Low body confidence and self-esteem is ruining sex

Low body confidence was behind 23% of New Zealanders and Australians saying they didn't want to have sex. Those affected are almost twice as likely to be women (30%) than men (16%). Younger generations are more affected than older generations, with Gen Y women most affected (42%). Gen Z women are second most affected, at 37%. Baby boomers (14%) and silent generation (5%) sex lives are least worried by low body confidence.

The survey found Australians are more affected by low self-esteem than New Zealanders with one in five Australians (20%) reporting low self-esteem hindered their sex lives, compared with 16% of New Zealanders.

Australian women are most affected (22%), compared with 19% of New Zealand women.

New Zealand men generally had healthy self-esteem with just 13% reporting body issues, compared with 17% of Aussie men.

But when you get deeper into the data the younger generations faced the biggest challenges with low self-esteem regardless of gender: with 28% of Gen Z, 26% of Gen Y men and 31% of Gen Z women and Gen Y women affected. The older generations, baby boomers (12%) and the Silent Generation (5%) are least affected.

Sex
New Zealanders love to sext more than Aussies

A trans-Tasman sex survey has found New Zealanders love to sext, and they love it even more than Australians do.

The UMR survey commissioned by Adulttoymegastore found 32% of New Zealand men have engaged in sexting compared to 29% of Australian men. Women love to sext with 37% of New Zealand women and 34% of Australian women saying they sext (35% New Zealanders total, 32% Australians total).

Almost half of New Zealanders and Australians have bought from an adult toy store.

A whopping 43% of New Zealanders 40% of Australians have bought sex toys. They are more likely to be women, but not by much. Aussie men trail behind. The survey found 41% of New Zealand men have bought sex toys, 38% of Australian men have, 45% of New Zealand women have shopped at an adult store followed by 42% of Australian women.

Gen Y are most like to buy (50%: 41% men, 58% women), followed by Gen X (50%: 47% men, 53% women). Adult shopping is still fairly common for baby boomers (32%) and silent gen (21%).

Sex
The secret to a good sex life: Confidence

Sophie McGrath says feeling confident to say what you want and need is crucial to having a happy, healthy sex life. When it comes to being confident asserting sexual needs and desires with a partner, only 45% of Kiwis and Aussies said they felt able to use their voice. The younger the person, the more likely they are to be able to do this confidently. The older, the less likely with Gen Z at 54%, Gen Y at 52%, Gen X at 44%, Baby boomers at 40% and Silent Gen at 34%.

Sex
NZ men lack confidence in the bedroom

Australians are edging out New Zealanders in being confident in their abilities in the bedroom. Just 21% of New Zealanders said they felt confident compared to 27% of Australians.

Australian women are the most confident (31%) compared with 27% of New Zealand women. While 24% of Aussie men are confident in their sexual performance, compared with only 15% of kiwi men!

Gen X men (17%) are the least confident in the bedroom, while men from the Silent Generation (36%) are the most confident.

Silent Generation women are the most confident in the bedroom (50%), followed by the younger women from Gen Z (40%).

Sex
Are NZers and Australians sexually repressed?

Well! That's a very big question! Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction Emma Hewitt said one of the aims of the survey was to find out just how free New Zealanders and Australians are in bed.

"We used another sliding scale to see how sexually repressed or sexually open-minded people think New Zealanders are. Respondents from both countries believed they sat in the middle," she said.

New Zealanders think New Zealanders are more open minded sexually than repressed. (57.9 on the scale on average). They also think Australians are more sexually open minded than New Zealanders giving them 60.8 on the scale.

In return, Australians think New Zealanders are more sexually open minded than New Zealanders do themselves, giving them 60.3 on the scale.

Australians consider themselves to be relatively sexually open minded, giving themselves an average of 64.1 on the scale.

Emma Hewitt says being sexually open-minded can mean being open to trying new things and feeling free to experiment and talk about sex.

"But being sexually open-minded doesn't mean doing things you don't want to do – it's about ensuring your needs are met no matter what those needs are."

The survey found 44% of Aussies like to try new things in the bedroom, compared with 40% of Kiwis. Aussie men are the most likely to try new things, at 51% while 49% of kiwi men want to experiment.

Being sexually open-minded doesn't mean doing things you don't want to do - it's about ensuring your needs are met, no matter what those needs are.

Kiwi women are least likely to want to try new things in the bedroom, with only 32% saying they like to experiment, 37% of Australian women said the same. Gen Z are the most sexually adventurous in the bedroom with 68% saying they like to try new things. Baby boomers (28%) and silent generation (23%) are least likely to want to experiment and try new things.

Sex drive impacts the desire to experiment and 30% of New Zealanders and Australians said they don't have a high sex drive.

They are more likely to be women. Australians (25%) are slightly more likely than New Zealanders (23%) to enjoy experimenting with sex toys during sex. Aussie men (27%) like sex toy experimentation more than New Zealand men (23%).

The younger generations enjoy experimenting with sex toys more than older generations. Gen Z enjoys experimenting with sex toys during sex more than any other gen (38%). Followed by Gen Y at 34%, Gen X at 27%, Baby boomers at 15%, and the Silent Generation at 7%.

Perspectives on adult toys are shifting in both countries with 47% of respondents saying they believe sex toys are becoming more mainstream. Women (49%) are slightly more likely to agree than men (45%).

They are more likely to be Gen Z (66%), Y (61%) or X (50%) and less likely to be Baby Boomers (32%) or Silent Gen (21%).

Of the survey respondents:

  • 42% were married
  • 27% were single
  • 15% were in a committed relationship and living together
  • 7% were in a committed relationship and not living together
  • 3% were recently divorced or separated
  • 3% were widowers
  • 1% were engaged
  • less than 1% were polyamorous
Sex
One in four NZers and Aussies want more sex

There's no shame in not wanting to have sex or wanting to have sex to matter what age you are. We're all different.

The survey found one in four New Zealanders (25%) and Australians (29%) are dissatisfied with how often they're having sex.

Australian men were the most dissatisfied/very dissatisfied with their sex frequency at 33%, and 30% of kiwi men described themselves as dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. Kiwi women were at 20% and Australian women were at 24%.

Generation X are most dissatisfied with their sex frequency, with 33% being dissatisfied/very dissatisfied with the amount of sex they're having. 20% of Gen X are having sex less than once a year.

Gen Y are the most sexually satisfied with 52% saying they're satisfied or very satisfied with their frequency of sex with 30% reporting that they're having sex a few times a week.

Men of the silent generation are the most dissatisfied with sex frequency at 42%, but women of the silent generation were among the most satisfied at 48%.

When analysing the frequency of which the silent generation has sex 53% have sex less than once a year.

Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction Emma Hewitt says the results make sense.

"As we age many of us become less interested in sex. But that's not always the case as we can see by older men who are unhappy," McGrath says.

"Older women responding to our survey said they were happy with less regular sex or no sex. Mismatched libidos often occur as we age."

"The key is to destigmatise masturbation and find other ways of intimacy so both partners in a relationship are feeling that their needs are met."

"There's no shame in not wanting to have sex or wanting to have sex no matter what age you are. We're all different."

Satisfaction
Only 16% of women orgasm during sex

The survey found 83% of New Zealand males and 80% of Aussie males orgasm most of the time or every time they have sex, only 50% of New Zealand women and 49% of Australian women orgasm most of the time or every time they have sex.

Women are less likely to orgasm during sex, with 26% of Kiwi women and 27% of Australian women stating they don't orgasm very often when they have sex.

Men are much more likely to reach orgasm during sex throughout the generations.

Generation data shows Gen X comes before Z. Gen X men and women are more likely to orgasm during sex than any other generation (72% orgasm most of the time or every time they have sex).

Least likely to orgasm during sex is Silent Generation (only 53% orgasm often during sex), closely followed by Generation Z (only 55% often reach orgasm during sex).

Satisfaction
Baby Boomer men think their partners are having orgasms

Gen Y are more likely than any other generation to both climax during sex with 59% of people reporting that they and their partner both climax during sex most of the time or more often.

Baby boomer men are much more likely to think they climax most of the time or more often with their partner (51%) while only 32% of female baby boomers believe this to be true.

Generation Y has the highest percentage of people with partners that care about their sexual pleasure with 78%.

Baby boomers are least likely of all generations to have lovers that care about their sexual pleasure, with 62% thinking their partner thinks it's important.

Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction Emma Hewitt says communication is the key to having a healthy sex life.

"You need to know that your partner is climaxing. And if they're not – you need to be working out what you need to do together to address that."

"Penetration alone is not enough generally to deliver an orgasm for women. If you've reached your 60s and you're still not sure if your partner is climaxing – it's time to look at why that is. Sex isn't a one-way street. You can't just ignore your partner's needs – no matter what your age."

If you've reached your sixties and you're still not sure if your partner is climaxing, It's time to look at why that is.

Of the survey respondents:

  • 42% were married
  • 27% were single
  • 15% were in a committed relationship and living together
  • 7% were in a committed relationship and not living together
  • 3% were recently divorced or separated
  • 3% were widowers
  • 1% were engaged
  • less than 1% were polyamorous

Adulttoymegastore commissioned UMR to carry out this 2020 sex survey. UMR offers clients an extensive quantitative research suite covering telephone, online, and face-to-face collection. This survey covered 2500 respondents handpicked by UMR to cover age, gender and region in Australia and New Zealand.

Satisfaction
Do men know where the clitoris is?

Australian men are less likely than New Zealand men to know where the clitoris is – the survey found 87% of Australian respondents said they knew where the clitoris is, compared with 92% of New Zealand men surveyed.

New Zealand men were also more likely to know where the G-spot is (72%) compared with Australian men (68%).

Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction says that the results being self-reported mean they need to be taken with a grain of salt.

"Let's be real here, New Zealand men also reported they knew where the G-spot is more than New Zealand women. And there are questions over whether the G-spot even exists! What we can take away from this is whether awareness of what works and what doesn't for our lovers is a focus for men."

But it's not just the vulva and vagina that are a mystery to many men. Only 18% of New Zealand men and 17% of Australian men know where the P-spot is. New Zealand women and Australian women weren't far behind, both at 16%.

Baby boomers are more likely than any other generation to report that they knew where the clitoris was located with 93% responding that they did. Generation Y are least likely to be able to find the clitoris - only 86% of Gen Y men know where to find it and only 89% of Gen Y women do.

The Silent Generation is most clued-up on the clitoris (perhaps due to life experience), with 96% saying they know where to find it.

Adulttoymegastore Head of Customer Satisfaction Emma Hewitt says sex education in New Zealand could focus more on anatomy and sexual pleasure so that when you begin a sexual relationship you know where the clitoris is.

"That so many people can't say where the clitoris is or P-spot is, yet they're having sexually relationships – it is really surprising. If you don't know your body, how can you enjoy it? It would be great to see a focus on celebrating your body and being able to explore it in a safe way that allows you to understand what you do and don't like."

When it comes to being confident in asserting sexual needs and desires with a partner, only 45% of respondents from both countries felt confident to do this. The younger the person, the more likely they were to be able to do this confidently. Working confidence and consent into relationships from teenage years onwards is crucial."
