Sex Educator Emma Hewitt Comments on Disturbing STI Surge in Australia

News.com.au featured Emma Hewitt in a recent article “Disturbing STI trend emerges in Australia"

News.com.au journalist Claudia Poposki discusses that health experts have issued an urgent warning as sexually transmitted infections surge across Australia. Poposki finds with both syphilis and gonorrhoea diagnoses having doubled in 2024, and only 16% of Australians aged 16 and 49 ever being tested for an STI, it's clear more attention needs to be on STIs. Poposki consults sources including Kirby Insitute's Dr Skye McGregor, vulvovaginal specialist naturopath Jessica Lloyd, and Adulttoymegastore's Certified Sex Educator Emma Hewitt-Johnson to uncover how we can better combat this STI surge.

Emma Hewitt-Johnson states that the numbers suggests that many people are foregoing basic protection with condom use. Hewitt-Johnson urges that"Condoms aren’t just about birth control, they’re about protection. STI spikes are inevitable when you’re playing fast and loose with something as important as your sexual health".

The reason for this lack of protection comes from concerns around reduced sensation and pleasure. However, Hewitt-Johnson also states that the"reduced sensation" claim is actually due to people using condoms incorrectly and could be easily solved by ensuring the correct size and adequate lubrication. "These easy fixes could arm two-thirds of non-condom wearers with the confidence to use condoms enjoyably again, and effectively curb the continually rising STI rates."

Proposki concludes from consulted sources that more condom usage, and more STI testing appears to be the way forward, with Emma Hewitt-Johnson confirming "Safer sex practices and regular testing are the easiest way to protect yourself and your partners from STIs. When everyone plays their part, everybody wins – it’s as simple as that."
