Kiwis certainly love their sex toys, and we love to hear it (it’s kind of our whole thing). 81% of the nearly 5000 Kiwis who responded to the Mega Kiwi Sex Survey currently own at least one sex toy. 9% said they don’t own one right now, but they have in the past. And 9% of respondents have never owned a sex toy.

And, contrary to what you might expect, there’s not much of a difference in toy ownership across gender. Yes, women are more likely to own a sex toy than men, but only just! 83% of women report owning a toy vs 79% of men. But they are both beat out by the 91% of trans and non-binary people that own a toy. Hell, yeah!

We asked the respondents that either currently own a toy or have in the past which types of sex toys they have tried and the top result might surprise you...

The humble dildo reigns supreme as the sex toy that most people have tried!

63% of Kiwis who have used a sex toy report trying a dildo. Clitoral vibrators are the second most popular sex toy overall, with 53% of Kiwis having tried one. Cock rings round out the top 3, with 49% and butt plugs come in a very close 4th with 48%.

The popularity of the dildo isn’t gender specific. Dildos took out the top spot for women (70%), non-binary folks (86%), trans women (80%), and trans men (87%). The only group where it didn’t rank for the top 3 most tried sex toys was among men. Only 54% of male survey respondents have tried a dildo. The most popular toy for men was cock rings (68%).

Dildos are a humble sex toy. In a world of thrusting, sucking, heating and even light up sex toys, the dildo seems simple by comparison. But this is why they’re so popular. The simplicity of a dildo means it's incredibly versatile and can be used in lots of different ways.

And with dildos, any hole really is a goal, as they can be used vaginally, anally, or orally, meaning that you can use it no matter your anatomy.

Dildos are designed primarily for penetration of the body. They can be thrust in or out, or they can be inserted and held in place to stimulate and lightly stretch the opening of the vagina or anus. This is seriously good when used alongside stimulation of the clitoris or penis with your hand or another toy. Many dildos will have a suction cup that can be attached to a smooth, flat surface like a chair or the wall of the shower for hands-free play too.

You can use dildos for strap-on sex and pegging with a harness and they are popular toys for double penetration, either alongside a penis or another sex toy. And of course, they are a great addition to fantasy role play. Werewolf, tentacle, unicorn horn. Whatever you can think up, there’ll be a fantasy dildo to help you get into the mood.
